How can I manage taxes for my event’s registration?
PheedLoop has four tax setting options to allow event organizers to customize their event’s registration settings in a way that matches their unique tax/fee structure: registration category-specific tax, organization-specific tax, location-based tax, and a general event tax rate.

- Category-Specific Tax
- Organization-Specific Tax
- Location-Based Tax
- Global Event Tax
- Quick Tip
- Conclusion
Category-Specific Tax
The first level of tax is category-specific tax, which is applied to all registration orders that are under the specified category. This tax type is best used if you want to charge different tax levels depending on the registration category.
- From the Event Dashboard, navigate to Registration > Categories and select the category you wish to assign taxes to
- Scroll down to Payment and toggle on the Use Fixed Tax Percent checkbox
- Enter the desired tax rate under the Tax Percent field.
- Note: Enter any value between 0 and 100 in this field.
- Select Save Changes
Organization-Specific Tax
The second level of tax is organization-specific tax, which is applied to all registration orders that select a pre-filled organization while registering. This type of tax is best used if you have a set list of organizations that require different tax levels.
- From the Membership Dashboard, navigate to Organizations > Organizations and select the organization you wish to edit
- Under the Tax field, enter the tax to assign to members of the organization
- Note: Enter any value between 0 and 100 in this field.
- Select Save Changes
Once you are done assigning taxes, you will now need to configure the registration category to identify members of organizations so that members are assigned their tax rates.
- From the Event Dashboard, navigate to Registration > Categories and select the desired Category
- Scroll down to Details and toggle on the Use Pre-Filled Organization List checkbox
- Select Save Changes
Now, registrants who choose this registration category can select an organization from your pre-set list and will automatically be charged the corresponding tax rate.
Location-Based Tax
The third level of tax is location-based tax, which is applied based on the address inputted during registration. This type of tax is best used if you want to customize the tax charged based on where the registrant is from.
- From the Event Dashboard, navigate to Registration > Location Taxes and above the Location Taxes table, select Create
- Under the State field, enter the 2 letter code for the state or province
- For example, enter ON for Ontario to apply this tax for registrants in Ontario.
- Under the Label field, enter a name for the location tax
- Under the Tax Rate field, enter the tax rate as a decimal
- PheedLoop supports up to 3 decimal places for taxes. For example, 14.975 will work but 14.9756 will not.
- Select Save Changes
If the registrant is outside of the state/province on the list, location taxes will not apply to them. Other tax settings will still apply such as General Tax and Category specific fixed tax. If multiple taxes are added to the same state/province, the system will treat them as cumulative. This is useful for provinces and states that have different sales taxes.

Global Event Tax
The fourth tax type is global event tax, which is applied to all registration orders for your event. This type of tax is best used if you want to apply the same tax rate to all registrants.
Quick Tip
PheedLoop allows you to apply multiple tax types to your event’s registration.
For example, you may set a global event tax rate and a category-specific tax rate. In this case, your category-specific tax rate would apply to your desired category, and the global tax rate would apply to the remaining categories.
The prioritization of tax types is as follows if you choose to apply more than one type:
- Category-specific tax (highest priority - will override all other applied tax types)
- Organization-specific tax
- Location-based tax
- Global event tax (lowest priority - will be overridden by all other applied tax types)
Conclusion
PheedLoop’s tax-setting options empower event organizers to master key skills in customizing registration systems. By understanding category-specific, organization-specific, location-based, and global event taxes, organizers can optimize tax structures, manage priorities, and streamline financial processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance for diverse event needs.
